Business Funding for Women and Minorities

The SBA doesn't have loans specifically for women and minorities, but they have a lot that women and minorities can access.  Plus, there are a number of other sources ...

How to Win Federal Contracts

The U.S. Small Business Administration this week launched its latest free online course, Business Opportunities: A Guide to Winning Federal Contracts. The instructional, self-paced guide is easy to follow and available on SBAs Website at http://www.sba.gov/training. From the SBAs training site, click on the menu of free online courses, and then select the first course listed under Government Contracting.

The Business Opportunities online course is designed for all small businesses, especially women entrepreneurs and small firms in underserved markets that have historically had difficulty in tapping into federal contract markets. The course is comprehensive and uses both script and audio to provide information about the $400 billion federal market, contract rules, and most importantly, where to find contract opportunities and how to sell to the government.

Great Business Idea:  An Accordion Store, with a Twist

So who says accordions must be sold in a brick and mortar store?  This enterprising entrepreneur found a ready market in the internet, and now reaches many, many clients that he would never have known before.  So many, in fact, that he's now making $250,000 a year.

11 Inner Cities to Benefit from SBA Program

The Emerging 200 program will focus on small companies that are poised for growth and potential job creation. It will enable entrepreneurs from 200 companies nationwide to participate in intensive training with a comprehensive curriculum focused on developing strategies to promote growth and to attract capital.

Research shows that small firms with fewer than 20 employees created 80 percent of the net new jobs in the economy from 1990 to 2003, according to the SBA. Also, small businesses in the inner city added nearly three times the number of new jobs larger companies added between 1995 and 2002.

The participants will have the opportunity to work with experienced mentors, attend workshops and develop connections with banks and the private equity community.

The initiative will be rolled out in late March and early April at the local level in each city. The local SBA offices will work to identify the companies in those areas to participate in Emerging 200, said Dennis Byrne, spokesman with the SBA in Washington, D.C. There will be an application process. More details will be available when the initiative is rolled out locally, he said.

The cities participating are: Atlanta; Albuquerque, N.M.; Baltimore, MD; Boston; Chicago; Des Moines, Iowa; Memphis, Tenn.; Milwaukee; New Orleans; Oakland, Calif., and Philadelphia.

SBA Patriot Express Loan Program is Doing Great

In the eight months since its launch, the U.S. Small Business Administration's Patriot Express Loan Initiative has produced 1,007 SBA guaranteed loans amounting to more than $100 million.

About 860 lenders are participating in the program nationwide, including over a dozen in the Buffalo area who have approved eight loans so far totaling $306,000.

The Patriot Express program gives banks extra incentives to provide business loans of up to $500,000 to military community members, including veterans, service members leaving active duty, Reservists and National Guard members, and their current spouses. The SBA guarantees up to 85 percent of loans for $150,000 or less, and up to 75 percent of larger loans.

The average loan amount made in the past eight months was $101,000.
