TOP OF THE BRIEFING
QUESTION ON ANGEL INVESTORS

The Top of the Briefing this week is the response to a question we received last weed: I was wondering if Angel Investor Networks provide capital to the film industry an if so, what is your format to qualify?

Wow, lots of questions in this one.  First, Business Plan Master does not set any qualifications.  We are not an angel investor company ourselves, although we work with them often.

Do angel investors provide financing to the film industry?  Probably.  In fact the term "angel investor" derived from Broadway "angels", those investors who staked fortunes on backing Broadway shows.  These creatures no doubt exist in Hollywood and everywhere else that films are made.

Finding them is another matter.  Most venture capital firms specialize in certain areas.  Not so angel investors.  Angel investors are individuals.  They may congregate once a month or so hear presentations from potential companies, but in nearly all angel groups, it is the individual investor who decides whether or not to invest.

First you will need to pass muster with the screening committee.  Instructions for submitting applications for various angel groups are on their websites.  Some ask for a page, some ask for a whole business plan.  No matter what they ask for, go in with everything: a short presentation, a long presentation, a one-page summary, a five-page summary and a whole business plan.  Your web site should also be up and operational.  The notion of a business plan on a napkin is seriously over rated.

You will find lists of prominent angel groups on our website, as well as suggestions for setting up a website, and creating a strong business plan.

Good luck.

NEW BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT
BABY BOOMER SWEET TOOTH

Cater to the Baby Boomers.  Millions of aging Boomers crave desserts with no sugar, no carbs, but lots of sweetness.  (I know.  I went to four different stores at Thanksgiving, looking for a sugar free pumpkin pie!)  That's what "Almost Paradise" has done.  The business is owned by single mom Gerene Schendel, and is run entirely from home.

The site features a variety of gourmet cheesecakes in several flavors, including low-carb, no -sugar varieties, and specialty dessert cakes.  The dessert cakes are perfect for gift-giving or serving guests at the holiday season.

This is definitely a low-cost startup.  Check your local health department regulations for food stores and restaurants, but that should be your only glitch.  Shippers will readily ship food.  Consumers will readily eat it.  (psssst.  If you want a good web host for selling your goodies, go to ours:  SiteBuildIt .  There is none better.)

BUSINESS BRIEFS
.

They're the new kids on the block. Welcome Tacoma Angels of Tacoma, Washington, the first angel network in that area.  Members have already invested $1.7 million, with an average deal coming in at $400,000.

Houston now has two major organizations for Latina entrepreneurs, one is a section of the Chamber of Commerce, and the other is made up of mostly Hispanic immigrant entrepreneurs, the Cámara de Empresarios Latinos de Houston.  Each is just a year old.  And each is thriving.  A recent survey showed that several Latina entreprenuers generate over $1 million a year in revenue.

There are some very major companies that are upping their presence in the Gay-Lesbian-Bisexual-Transgender (GLBT) community.  Companies like Raytheon, Wells Fargo, Proctor and Gamble, Walmart, Bank of America, and many others are now openly seeking GLBT employees.  This means they are also openly welcoming GLBT contractors for all sorts of services.  If this situation fits your circumstances, go for it -- contact the nearest branch and become their preferred contractor.  Read more here.

India may be the next big area for angel investors, with huge growth already this year.  In 2005 there only about 20 investment in India; already in 2006 there are over 40.  At this rate, India will become the Angel Hub of Asia in no time at all.
