You've heard it so often it sounds like a mantra: "Partner with this VC." "Partner with that bank." "Partner with an angel."

Bull.

They don't want a "partner". Oh, it's a very nice illusion. You join arms with your funding source and march off into the sunset.

But it's just not real. VC's haven't got time to march off into anyone's sunset. Nor do any other financiers that I know of.

They need leaders. Leaders are the ones who are successful. Leaders pull a team together. Leaders forge new ideas. Leaders tackle problems head on. Leaders are also strong enough to share the spotlight with everyone who helped, including those bankers/investors who really didn't do all that much.

There probably was a time when your local banker would sit down with you and go over your financials, looking for ways he could help make your business better. But those days are long gone.

Now when you step up to shake the hand of an investor or lender, be the leader. Be the one who says, "I've got the answers. Do you want to come along?"
