We received a question the other day which at first glance seemed so
dorky that I tossed it in the garbage. But it has been haunting
me.
Question: How do I meet an
angel investor?
OK. If i were looking for an
angel investor, where would I look?
1. The angel groups,
listed on these pages.
That, actually, would be my first
stop. Nearly 200 top angel groups are listed here, with contact
information..
2. My banker.
Banker? Yep. Bankers are
money people. Money people know other money people. Ask for
an introduction. The worst she can say is No.
3. My barber.
There is a barber in Menlo Park,
California, who is legendary. Finance folk book months in advance
for an hour in his chair. And he knows EVERYBODY. This is
the $400 haircut personified. (Sorry, ladies. Since 95% of
all finance people are men, there are no beauticians that I recommend.)
4. Conventions and meeting
places.
Watch for industry or area-wide
conferences and conventions. Some you can talk at; some you can
listen at. Look for the ones that promote new business,
originality and new technology. If it is a good conference, money
people will be there scoping it out.
5. Venture capital fairs.
The terms "venture capital"
and "angel investor" are often interchangeable. One
infers larger investments, the other smaller investments. But they
all invest. Don't ignore one or the other just because of the
title.
6. The car wash.
A car wash in Hoboken probably won't
bring in many angel investors. But one in fancy Menlo Park or the
finer areas of Boston are really good candidates. Strike up a few
conversations. Wait around while your car gets detailed.
Lots of people know lots of other people.
7. Get an introduction from
someone who has been there.
Watch the papers. Who is getting
money for expansion? Where did the money come from? Invite
that person to lunch and ask about an introduction for you and your
business. The closer your business is to the one that was already
financed, the better.
Do you have a favorite technique to
meet deep pocket people? If so, we'd
love to hear it!
