Yeesh, you're over 55 years old. Too old to
learn new tricks, eh? Who the heck wants to hire you? You
do.
Seriously. An
amazing number of seniors are starting their own businesses. In
fact, according to CNN Money, in 2006 there was a huge jump in the
number of self employed people over 55 years old -- a 33 percent jump
over 2005. Part of this is no doubt due to the fact that there are
more people over 55 than there ever have been. But a lot of it has
to be because we are just getting smarter.
How many of your
colleagues really want to work for someone else? Do you? I
sure didn't. That's why I started this business.
And that's the second
major trend: lots and lots of these new businesses are online
businesses. The work world is our oyster as it has never been
before. The internet has leveled the playing field as no other
technology or industry has ever done. It doesn't matter what you
wear, how tall you are, how smooth your voice is. What matters is
that you have the guts to get out there and start your own business.
Even those who open up
new brick and mortar businesses depend on the internet to get the word
out about their products and services. Many, many business that
have never previously looked more than 20 miles away now have their
sights set across some very big oceans.
Give it some
thought. I know that the service I work with, SBI,
has a huge number of seniors, each one finding his/her own niche in the
business world.
Come on in. The
water's fine!
