TOP OF THE BRIEFING
TOO OLD TO CUT THE MUSTARD?

Yeesh, you're over 55 years old. Too old to learn new tricks, eh? Who the heck wants to hire you? You do.

Seriously. An amazing number of seniors are starting their own businesses. In fact, according to CNN Money, in 2006 there was a huge jump in the number of self employed people over 55 years old -- a 33 percent jump over 2005. Part of this is no doubt due to the fact that there are more people over 55 than there ever have been. But a lot of it has to be because we are just getting smarter.

How many of your colleagues really want to work for someone else? Do you? I sure didn't. That's why I started this business.

And that's the second major trend: lots and lots of these new businesses are online businesses. The work world is our oyster as it has never been before. The internet has leveled the playing field as no other technology or industry has ever done. It doesn't matter what you wear, how tall you are, how smooth your voice is. What matters is that you have the guts to get out there and start your own business.

Even those who open up new brick and mortar businesses depend on the internet to get the word out about their products and services. Many, many business that have never previously looked more than 20 miles away now have their sights set across some very big oceans.

Give it some thought. I know that the service I work with, SBI, has a huge number of seniors, each one finding his/her own niche in the business world.

Come on in. The water's fine!

THE NEXT BIG BUSINESS BOOM
ONLINE TRAINING

Forget the fact that there are already dozens, if not hundreds of online trainers. Most of them are very general. It will be hard to compete against them.

But, as the Wall Street Journal pointed out on August 14, 2007, E-learning is now the top method that companies use to train employees. It ranks higher than classroom instruction, higher than learning games, higher than even in person mentoring/coaching.

The key is to find a niche that isn't being overdone. Thousands and thousands of companies need to train people for specialized skills. Look at your background and take a hard look at what you have to offer. If there is something there, you may be sitting on a goldmine.
