TOP OF THE BRIEFING
ARE YOU HAVING A BAD HAIR DAY?

Got to chatting with Debs, an online friend. The topic turned to hair. Honest. Before you know it, we were giggling about the fact that we no longer have "bad hair days", ironic in that our lovely coifs aren't seen by much of anybody.

Bingo! That's why our hair always looked great -- there was nobody there to judge it but ourselves, and we thought we looked pretty good.

The conversation really tickled me. Here we are, a couple of aging broads who should be looking at retirement. Instead, we're in the middle of burgeoning internet businesses, and loving every minute of it.

To top it off, we're probably working harder than most people who work in offices. A "day off" is usually only one or two hours on the internet, instead of the usual ten hours.

But that's right in line with what study after study shows for people who are in business for themselves. We all work longer hours, more days, and may not make more money than our "hired-out" buddies, but we're happier. It's that "happiness" part that is really hard to argue with.

We feel in control of our lives. AND we have the support of our spouses when we work on "off" days, unlike our office counterparts.

I wake up with a smile in the morning. And keep that smile pasted there nearly all day. Life just doesn't' get any better than that.

May you have many Great Hair Days, too!

TOP OF THE MONEY
7 1/2 CENTS

It won't be here tomorrow. It won't come with a bang. No, it will sneak up on you like a stalking tiger. Then, WHAM! The floodgates of the money handlers will spring open and money will flow into business coffers like it hasn't for years.

It's not that money isn't available now. It is. Lots of it is available. But lenders of all ilk are skittish about letting go of that money. They are placing higher credit qualifiers and higher expectations on businesses that they lend that money to. So right now it's just tougher to latch onto the millions that is sitting around.

Our estimate is that this situation is going to last for the next year or so, depending on the money supply. Then, one day when we aren't looking, everybody will be lending again, just like before.

So for the next year or so plan on going in really strong when looking for funding of any kind. Be ready with a strong business plan, and have available any type of document that might be requested. See Evaluating Your Business Plan for a brief outline of the most common documents requested.

The 0.5% drop in the interest rate announced by the Federal Reserve Board last week doesn't sound like much, but it may be just the impetus that the U.S. economy needs to jump start a recovery. Like in the musical "Pajama Game", 7 1/2 cents doesn't sound like a helluv a lot, but added up it makes a real difference.

It has taken us several years to dig our recession hole, and it's going to take us a bit to climb out of it. But nothing keeps us down for long. Not even a recession.

The world is growing older. Developing a business focused on the group makes a lot of financial sense. But don't do for the money. This is a calling. While there is certainly money to be made in the elder care business, keep the focus on "care" and you will do well.
