State regulations on liquor licenses are state based, and are subject to change. Be sure to check on licensing requirements before going any further. Many of these licenses can run into ten of thousands, or even hundreds of thousands, of dollars.
Local licensing may also come into play. For instance, some communities won't allow a bar within X number of feet of a school. Be sure to check with the local school district offices and the county planning department to see if any restrictions might make it tougher for your business.
Bankers and lenders understand numbers. For the most part they know that the liquor industry does well in almost any economy. Start out showing them that you've got the background to run a bar business, and their interest will be piqued.
Create a map with hot spots showing where your clientele live and work. If there are other bar businesses nearby, point them out too. This is one business that thrives on competition. The more, the merrier in all respects.
And do check up on that competition. How will your bar business be different? How will it stand out? Are the local established bars really profitable? Go and do a physical count if need be, but make sure there are enough people to go around, with some to spare.
Also get demographic information for metropolitan areas from BizMiner. In the menu on the left, click on "View All Reports", then on "Area Demographics". Then in the little blue box on the upper right hand of the next page, select your state or your metropolitan area from the drop down menu.
You can see a sample of what the report from BizMiner will be by looking at the bottom of the page.
For even more specific information, click on "Find a local business summary" toward the bottom of the page. In the page that appears, choose your state, metropolitan area, or county. Select your business from the list of industries on the next page.
These are the numbers that are most used by bankers and lenders of all sorts.
