Take one business dream, add one basic business plan (with a punch), and you are on your way to business success. There are a million different kinds of businesses -- some large, some small, some with high hopes.
With nearly all businesses, there is simply a core group of information that needs to be included. Every business will find some of these sections relatively easy to write, and some will be harder. But all businesses will need all the sections in some way. These basic sections are (in no particular order):
Biographical Information. Many consider this to be the most important section. The rule of thumb is that an investor can get a good business a whole lot easier than he can get a strong leader, and there is a lot of truth in that belief. If venture capital is your goal, then look first to your own leadership abilities, your own record of success.
Industry Information for Your Basic Business Plan. What your industry is doing is important. Discovering the stats that will identify trends now is a whole lot harder. Even government industry trends may be out of date. Check with your banker to see what the bank looks at, and look to your industry associations for up to date information.
Financial Information. Your historical summaries and pro-formas go here. With a solid grasp on your client base and marketing requirements, a solid pro forma can be developed relatively easily. A VALID pro-forma is nearly impossible. What lenders need to know here is that you know how to handle money, an essential skill in virtually all businesses.
Marketing. Simply put, Who are your clients? And why will they buy from you? There are thousands of books written on this topic, but they all come back to these two essential questions. Answer them and you are home free.
Actually, just presenting the essential information noted above will put you way ahead of the game. Most business plans don't get that far.
But you want more than to "get ahead of the game". You want to really get funding.
So do something extra, something more. Do something that clearly demonstrates that you are really professional, things like
Set up your website, at least the core part of it. Show off your style, and really demonstrate how you will reach your clients.
Set up your Twitter account.
Create layouts for your advertising, and present as complete ads as you can in your basic business plan.
Create the business plan in the general style of your business. For example, if your logo is blue and black, use blue and black headers for your sections. Don't go overboard, but do incorporate what you can.
Establish an Advisory Board, key people in your industry and your community. The Advisory Board has no real power, but their advice can aid your business immensely and influence a banker incredibly.
There are a lot of other things you can do to turn a ho hum basic business plan into a winning business plan. And THAT is what you need to do.
