Nov 30, 2006, Large US Companies Have Another 5 Year
Boondoogle
For years, the Inspector General of the Small Business
Administration (SBA) has recommended that small federal
contractors be required to certify their size status annually,
to curtail fraud and abuse in small business contracting. The
SBA, however, has consistently refused to implement that
policy. Instead, officials within the Bush administration have
finalized a rule that will allow the government to continue to
report contracts with large companies as small business awards
through the year 2012.
Well, whooptee do for big companies.

Nov 17, 2006, SBA Revamps Rules on "Small
Business"
When Microsoft and Google can be awarded business contracts
set aside for small business, something is wrong.
Theoretically, the SBA has fixed the glitch. But there have
been announcements like this before that did absolutely
nothing. There's no reason to believe this fix will fix it any
better.

Sep 28, 2006, Exploding Home Businesses
The Census Bureau found 49 percent of the nation's
businesses are operated from home. Also, three-quarters of
U.S. businesses are self-employed individuals with no paid
employees, it found.
This trend is even most pronounced among women who, the
Census Bureau said, are choosing home based businesses for
family reasons.
The report was based on information collected from more
than 2.3 million firms as part of a survey of business owners,
part of the bureau's 2002 Economic Census, conducted by mail
among a random sample of U.S. businesses.

Wichita, Kansas, is Gearing Up for Growth
The SBA's 504 loan program helps new and
existing businesses obtain subordinated financing to purchase
land, buy buildings, remodel, purchase machinery or other
equipment. It is
always good news when 504 financing picks up -- it means a
region is growing rapidly.
Wichita, Kansas is the growing
area.
RMI, a Missouri-based certified
development company specializing in the Small Business
Administration's 504 loan program, has opened a Wichita
office.
RMI is one of the largest CDCs in SBA
Region 7 with more than 100 years of professional staff
experience in packaging, closing and servicing 504 loans. Such
programs are under-utilized in Kansas, says Zachary Blake, an
RMI spokesman.
"There's a real need for small
businesses to get in at fixed rates with the number
rising," he says. "Right now, you can get in at 6.88
percent on a 20-year fixed loan."
All 400 SBICs
I have looked and looked and looked for a
list of the 400 or so SBICs (Small Business Investment
Companies). I finally found the list at the link noted.
The list isn't pretty.
It's miserably incomplete.
And it tells stuff that I didn't want to know, like how
self-serving many of the SBICs are. But that's the link to the list.
Wanted: Entrepreneurs
Got a strong entrepreneurial bent?
Got some background to back that up?
New and emerging companies want YOU.
No kidding.
There's a real lack of talent and experience in the entrepreneurial
ranks. Everything
from CEOs to CFOs to marketing specialists are needed to lead
the next generation of business leaders to usher in the new
emerging companies.
It's no small task, as anyone who has
done it will tell you.
But the rewards, both financial and
personal, are phenomenal.
