There are baskets for a gazillion things.  There are wine gift baskets and corporate gift baskets, wedding gift baskets, and baskets for just about every holiday and celebration imagineable.

So your first big decision for a gift basket home based business is: What kind of gift baskets will you create?  And, ohmygoodness, where will you put all that inventory?  and all the baskets?

Those are not insignificant questions.  A gift basket home based business places more demands on space than most home businesses.

Task 2:  Where Is Your Market, And How Will You Reach Them?

There are some nationally based business and franchises in the gift basket business that have this marketing issue down cold.  Yours is more of a challenge because it is likely that yours will be local delivery.

If newspaper advertising is prohibitive for your business, look to the internet.  With even a basic website, Google allows you to enter geographic specific information about your business so that people searching nearby will find you.  And be sure, too, to include your address, email and phone number on every single page of your website.  Then, when someone in Seattle is looking to send a gift basket to Duluth (and you are in Duluth), they are far more likely to find your gift basket home based business.

Task 3:  Define The Numbers For Your Gift Basket Home Based Business.

The ebook Your Home Based Business has excellent worksheets for determining your market base, figuring financials and getting a handle on your business.  Before tearing out a closet to make a big shipping room, take time to work through some of the issues presented there.

And look closely at your inventory costs and delivery times.  You may be able to order some product and have it within a week or two, and other items might take a month or two to reach you. 

Task 4:  Let Your Creativity Run Wild!

This is why you are opening a gift basket home based business, isn't it?  Great.  Few businesses allow -- even demand -- the creativity that a gift basket business does.  It should be great fun making it grow.
