Excerpt from the Workbook
7 Step Graphic Design Business Plan :
SELLING
YOURSELF
Personal service businesses like a graphics design business have
one big thing in common: the “service” they are selling is
usually their own. This poses real challenges to most people.
While most entrepreneurs can extol the virtues and benefits of
others’ skills, it is often difficult to “sell” our own.
The solution is to look upon it as “presenting” yourself, your
skills, your background, and the need for that in your
community, no matter how “community” is defined.
And that is exactly what your business plan will do.
KEY CONSIDERATION
It is very possible to have a hugely successful graphic design
business with one person. Or it is very possible to have a
hugely successful graphics design business employing dozens of
people. Determining just what you want is the key to getting it.
STRONGEST ADVANTAGE
As far as your graphic design business plan goes, you are half way there. You
can probably already visualize it. You know the look you want,
the feeling you want to project. That by itself puts you to the
top of the line. If you had any idea how many thousands of
business plans your banker sees that look like the morning
oatmeal got dribbled on them, you would really appreciate your
advantage.
STRONGEST DISADVANTAGE
Convincing people that you know what you are doing is not always
the easiest thing to accomplish. Convincing yourself that you
know what you are doing can be equally difficult. While there is
likely little doubt that you know graphic design, how well do
you really know business?
OVERCOMING THE DISADVANTAGES WITH YOUR GRAPHIC DESIGN BUSINESS PLAN
Nothing spells SUCCESS like SUCCESS. You have to be successful,
or you wouldn’t be where you are. Project that success so that
others can understand it.
- List clients and projects
you have worked on
- Include copies of some of
your outstanding designs
- Demonstrate your business
acumen
It is that last one, business
acumen, that really needs attention. How did you get so smart?
Did you attend post-grad classes? Were you in charge of large
budget projects? Did you guide a prior firm through tough
economic challenges? You could have gotten your smarts from a
lot of sources. Here is where you really need to highlight it.
Your banker may not recognize a good graphic design, but she
will recognize strong business talent. And it is the business
talent that will get you your funding.
Be sure to define what aspect
of graphic design is your forte. In many minds, all
graphic designers are the same. It is up to you to
differentiate and define your market, whether you are
- a freelance designer
- a creative designer
- advertising design company
- print design service
- general design studio
- web design company
- design agency
- art design studio
- commercial artist
Startups are also a problem. A
startup in a “soft” industry (i.e., non-essential to health or
welfare) is a real tough sell. No one wants to bet on an untried
idea, or an untried person.
But an EXPANSION business. Now that's another keg of fish. This
is a company that has proven success, and wants more success.
That's something that lenders like.
So take your graphics design business just as far as you can,
then go for "EXPANSION FUNDING" in your graphic design
business plan. You'll be nearly home before
you know it. For instance,
- Line up some clients.
- Actually do some projects on
your own, working out of a tiny office or your home.
- Incorporate
- Establish a business banking
account
- Set up an Advisory Board –
the more heavyweight talent you can bring to this board, the
better
- Get endorsements from others
in the industry
Imagine that someone were
coming to you, wanting to set up a boxing gym. What information
would you want from that person before you were willing to give
him money? THAT’s that kind of information you need to give your
banker.
HOW MUCH FUNDING WILL YOUR GRAPHIC DESIGN BUSINESS PLAN NEED?
Look back up at the top of the page. What kind of business do
you really want? A one person business? A hundred person
business? The hundred person business won't necessarily make you
richer than the one person business. It is all a matter of
choice.
Then, as with any business, sit down and run the numbers.

GaliYeah. I can do
a whole lot better on the template design. But, to tell
the truth, I really didn't know what went into each of those
gorgeous pages I designed. Now I do. Whew.
What a relief. |

Starting out on your own is challenging. At least now I've
got a good toehold on the financial end. For me, that's
the toughest part. I can create design after design and be
quite happy. But putting words into a business plan really
had me stumped. I'm a pretty good self-promoter, but this
was big time self-promotion. |
