Where do home based business startup ideas come from? Try looking out, and looking in.
Legions of workers would like to work at home. The benefits are huge: no commute time, flexible scheduling, more attention to family matters, ability to use your creativity and independence, unlimited financial potential. The list goes on and on.
Some workers prefer working for others, while others prefer creating their own businesses.
Personally, I prefer the latter. But I know there are any number of reasons that people might choose to work for someone else, so let's take a look at each approach.
The most popular type of work at home job is that of a service center phone responder. Any number of companies hire work at home people to staff their customer service phone lines.
Pay: Decent, not great, unless you have particular specialized skills.
Advantages: It really is a work at home business. There is usually some time flexibility, although you will be more in demand if you can work the busy hours of the business.
Disadvantages: No advancement. Not much of a future.
This is your second best option.
Companies are beginning to allow for more flexibility in job location. Some jobs can be home based assignments at least part of the week. Corporate librarians, for instance, have successfully transitioned to home several days a week, as have some bookkeepers and advertising people. Even the HR staff can conduct a lot of its business from home phones and computers.
Be creative here, and see what you and your boss can come up with. It may surprise you.
I don't even mention the catalog sales and envelope stuffing offers that you see everywhere -- these aren't worth the paper they're written on. Pass them by.

Then add some ideas of your own. Nothing coming to mind? Well, how about:
Your very best home based business startup ideas will be something that is already a part of your life. It could be something you do everyday, or a dream you dream. But it is there.
There are practical considerations, like how much money will it take to start the business, but those considerations are secondary.
First, find your passion. What will get you out of bed every morning, anxious to meet the new challenges?
Personally, I have a strong preference for an internet business. With minimal skill, it can provide a pretty good income. Please check out Starting A Tutoring Business for one approach on creating a strong home business.
But this is YOUR business -- not mine. You need to find your business, your way.
