Martial Arts Business Plans

Jujitsu, kettle ball, aerobics, yoga -- we get questions about all sorts of martial arts business plans, and we've got a few answers, too!

  A Home Aerobics Studio

I am interested in opening an aerobics fitness class for women only for a very low monthly fee. My goal is to provide this facility for housewives in the day-time as they are at home and need to keep fit.   I plan to start classes at home, then later expand to a retail location -- is that a good idea?

Our Reply to Home Aerobics Studio:
Sophia, starting your business at home sounds like a great idea. It is typically lower cost, and can be quite high profit. Be sure to check the zoning and business laws in your county to make sure you're not doing anything terribly unusual.

An excellent starting point is YOUR HOME BASED BUSINESS.  Take a few hours, or a few days, and figure out just what you will need to make this business a real success.  It could be the most valuable time you use in planning your home aerobics studio.
Also, consider taking your home aerobics business worldwide. With a website, you can show women all about exercising, day or night. You would definitely be a great infopreneur, providing expert advice. This also is very cost to start, with very high profit potential. it would be a great addition to your other business.

A Martial Arts Business Plan for a Kettlebell Gym

How do I write a business proposal for a Martial Arts School? Is there a website, template, etc.?

I want to open a small (1500 - 2500 sq ft) kettlebell gym. Class size of up to 20. Am I better with the fitness or yoga studio business plan?

Our Reply To Kettlebell Gym:
That is an excellent question. I must confess, I had to do a bit of research to find out what kettlebells really are -- lol. But, now that I know, I think you have two good choices, depending on your leanings:

A Fitness Club Business Plan. This is appropriate if you are using expensive equipment that needs financing, and/or need additional insurance to cover your clients.

There are actually three parts to this business plan: the workbook (pictured), an Excel worksheet for the financials, and a template for your business plan.

Click on the book cover for more information.

Yoga Studio Business Plan. This plan assumes limited financing for your equipment.

This Yoga Studio Business Plan contains the same three components as the Fitness Club Business Plan, but is simply geared toward more limited financing for all manner of martial arts business plan options.
I don't know how expensive your kettlebells are, so I am not certain which option would work best. I'll let you decide.
As long as you account for the cost of the equipment and keep your marketing options open, either of them would probably work well.
May your new venture be all you hope it will be! CJ

Aerobics Gym Business Plan

I need a business plan for aerobics. I am an instructor. It is very important  for me -- I really like it.

Our Reply to Aerobics Gym Business Plan:
You are in luck! You've got several choices:
Business Plan for a Yoga Studio (see above). Use this one if you are going to rent a studio and set up classes.

Personal Trainer Business Plan. This is best if you will be doing one-on-one training/coaching. Also, if you are just starting out, be sure to read Start Up Right Now. This will get you started with all the planning that goes into a new business, cost breakdowns, banking, insurance, promotion, etc. Very, very useful.

You've got lots of options.  Good luck on your new business!

A Self Defense Business Proposal

Self Defense Proposal by: Dave

I am a self defense instructor I have an importunity to teach at a gym. I'd like to have a proposal to give the owner but I don't know what or even if there is a standard in the field. The gym has a monthly fee that, but also offers personal training at an extra charge. i'd like to do this right.

Our Reply To The Self Defense Business Plan:
Dave, our best suggestion is to put together a formal proposal with some of the elements of a business plan, such as: (1) your resume, highlighting awards and strengths; (2) copies of articles written about you, copies of certificates, etc. (3) a summary of the income you could generate at the gym, being sure to keep the estimates reasonable and on target. (4) an outline of how the gym could use your services in their marketing plan, with announcements of new trainer, etc.

Check out the Personal Trainer Business Plan (see above) for some ideas on how to handle the presentation.
Whatever proposal you put together needs to take into consideration whatever compensation program you have discussed with them, whether it is as an independent contractor or as an employee. Perhaps a percentage of fees would be a fair approach.
Good luck on your new venture!

Martial Arts Business Plan

I can't believe that my area doesn't have a strong martial arts studio, one built professionally, with professional instructors.  I've got about a third of the money I need, and have some home equity I can pledge for a loan, but I don't want to just walk into a bank and say, Hey where do I sign on the dotted line?  What's my best course of action to make ti really happen?

Our Reply To Martial Arts Business Plan Question:
First, work through the Start Up Right Now workbook (see above).  Really nail down just how much you will need, and why.  That's the hardest question you have to answer.
Then take a look at the Yoga Studio Business Plan (see above) . It was created specifically for a yoga studio, but a martial arts business shares many of the same issues and concerns. They tend to be about the same size of business, and attract similar types of people.
There is a pilates studio opening up across the street. I am always glad to see this type of business flourishing. It is good for business, good for the patrons, and good for the business owner. (There is a donut shop next to it, but that is a different story -- lol)
