MAVERICK
ANGELS -- THE ANGELS WITH A HEART
How often do
you hear angel investors talk about responsibility -- to entrepreneurs and
to the community? Not nearly often enough. Maverick Angels may
just be one of a kind.
There it was, tucked away in the very
last paragraph of an otherwise rather mundane article.
Q: What makes Maverick Angels
different from other angel groups?
JD: Well, for one, we will look
at any deal that has significant upside, no matter what industry they
come from, not just technology companies. Also, we have a charitable
focus because we believe it is important to support our local
communities.
Charitable? Angels? The
absolute epitome of capitalistic endeavors. (Well, venture capital
firms actually take the No.1 spot in that category.)
I wouldn't have been so impressed, but
"JD" is John Dilts, the former head of Keiretsu Forum in Los
Angeles. That he is heading up Maverick Angels, the angels with a
conscience it seems, is absolutely refreshing.
The Maverick Angels seem to take this
"responsibility" really seriously. They employ a
full time staff that is focused everyday on creating a well-coordinated
deal screening process where members collaborate smoothly to evaluate
opportunities. They have also created proprietary software called
MaverickLink(TM) which is focused on supporting the back end due diligence
process following an investor presentation. In the end, they strive to
make sure that they have the best members to provide capital, the best
presenters to provide investment opportunities and the best sponsors to
provide much needed resources.
All of this, and a community focus too.
What can I say? "I wish you
every success imaginable!"
