I have recently jump-started a home based business. My first client has refused to pay me because I did not put a tax ID or my SSN on the invoice. Is this legal and how can I recuperate my money?

When a company pays $X amount to another company, they are required to maintain records on the selling company's identification. That is to keep companies from reporting slews of bogus purchases on their tax filings. It is not fun, but it is part of business. The FEIN number is a painless way of helping your customer obey the law. On the plus side, be glad you've got customers already! If you didn't have customers, you wouldn't have this problem.
