I have recently jump-started a home based business. My first client has refused to pay me because I did not put a tax ID or my SSN on the invoice. Is this legal and how can I recuperate my money?

That's very true. Licenses for your business are always an important issue. To get your Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN) call 866-816-2065 . If you would like to see the questions they will ask you, you can retrieve the hard copy form at http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/fss4.pfd .

When a company pays $X amount to another company, they are required to maintain records on the selling company's identification. That is to keep companies from reporting slews of bogus purchases on their tax filings. It is not fun, but it is part of business. The FEIN number is a painless way of helping your customer obey the law.

On the plus side, be glad you've got customers already! If you didn't have customers, you wouldn't have this problem.

Why not add a TAX ID#. Call the IRS today. It only takes 5 minutes over the phone and I think it's free. Don't waste your time with petty stuff. This is your business and the rest of your life. Do the right thing.
