Excerpt from the Workbook 7 Step
Business Plan for a Photography Studio:
You are the
envy of nearly everyone you meet. You have a creative business,
and everyone is going to assume you are getting very wealthy.
Whether you specialize in pet photography, digital photography,
children’s photography, wedding photography, portrait
photography, commercial photography, or dozens and dozens of
other fields, there are thousands of people who wish they had
your talent.
KEY CONSIDERATION
It is very possible to have a hugely successful photography
business with one person. Whether yours is a home based
photography business or a true photography studio, odds are
pretty good you are very self motivated.
STRONGEST ADVANTAGE
As far as your business plan goes, you are half way there. You
can probably already visualize it. You know the look you want,
the feeling you want to project. That by itself puts you to the
top of the line. If you had any idea how many thousands of
business plans your banker sees that look like the morning
oatmeal got dribbled on them, you would really appreciate your
advantage.
STRONGEST DISADVANTAGE
Convincing people that you know what you are doing is not always
the easiest thing to accomplish. Convincing yourself that you
know what you are doing can be equally difficult. While there is
likely little doubt that you know photography, how well do you
really know business? And how will you compete with those
thousands of others who want to be photographers too?
OVERCOMING THE DISADVANTAGES WITH YOUR BUSINESS PLAN FOR YOUR
PHOTOGRAPHY STUDIO
Nothing spells SUCCESS like SUCCESS. You have to be successful,
or you wouldn’t be where you are. Project that success so that
others can understand it.
- List clients and projects
you have worked on
- Include copies of some of
your outstanding designs
- Demonstrate your business
acumen
It is that last one, business
acumen, that really needs attention. How did you get so smart?
Did you attend post-grad classes? Were you in charge of large
budget projects? Did you guide a prior firm through tough
economic challenges? You could have gotten your smarts from a
lot of sources. Here is where you really need to highlight it.
Your banker may not recognize a good photograph, but she will
recognize strong business talent. And it is the business talent
that will get you your funding.
Be sure to define what aspect of photography is your forte. In
many minds, all photographers are the same. It is up to you to
differentiate and define your market, whether you focus on
- School portraits
- Commercial layouts
- Wedding photos
- Pet photos
- Retouched photos
- A part time home based
photography business or full time photography studio
Startups are also a problem. A
startup in a “soft” industry (i.e., non-essential to health or
welfare) is a real tough sell. No one wants to bet on an untried
idea, or an untried person.
But an EXPANSION business. Now that's another keg of fish. This
is a company that has proven success, and wants more success.
That's something that lenders like.
So take your photography business just as far as you can, then
go for "EXPANSION FUNDING". You'll be nearly home before you
know it. For instance,
- Line up some clients.
- Actually do some projects on
your own, working out of a tiny studio or your home.
- Incorporate
- Establish a business banking
account
- Set up an Advisory Board –
the more heavyweight talent you can bring to this board, the
better
- Get endorsements from others
in the industry
- Set up your web site
Imagine that someone were
coming to you, wanting to set up a boxing gym. What information
would you want from that person before you were willing to give
him money? THAT’s that kind of information you need to give your
banker.
HOW MUCH FUNDING WILL YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY BUSINESS PLAN NEED?
As a solo business, odds are that you won’t need a great deal of
funding. Certainly nothing like a manufacturing plant. But you
will need some. Really itemize it.
As a single person business, you probably need to shift from
being a part time photographer to being full time, with all the
costs associated with that. A better computer? A DSL line? A
webmaster to revamp or redesign your site? Specialized software
for your photography services? The more specific you can be, the
more it will demonstrate your business experience.
YOUR LIKELY LENDER/INVESTOR
The
SBA is usually your best bet for smaller businesses.
THE LAST WORD ON YOUR BUSINESS PLAN FOR PHOTOGRAPHY SERVICES
This is simply an amazing field to be in. The tremendous
opportunity you have to capture public style, and to influence
it, places you in a unique position in our society. Tackle your
business with the style and professionalism with which you
tackle your photography assignments, and you will do just fine.

Thomas R. HerrickI can't
believe I went this long without writing a business plan.
Actually, I've borrowed money before. My local banker
always filled out the paperwork for me, but he said he couldn't
do it any more. So here I am, a veteran photographer
trying to figure out what to do. The good news is that it
doesn't look as hard as I thought it would be. |

Li NielsenMy sister and
I have been photographers for years. We've traveled the
world, following our father's Army transfers, so we learned a
lot about travel photography. Now we are ready to do it
full time. We have a couple of assignments ready, but we
really need new equipment to do it right. I showed your
book to our banker and he said this is what we need, so we are
both very happy. |

Sandee SamuelsI am a lot
better at images than I am at words. Thanks for helping
out. |

Jamie Browne, Providence RI
I've been handling wedding and
party photography for years, but I just stumbled on an
opportunity for underwater photography. What an amazing
opportunity! All I needed was some additional equipment,
and now I've got it. I also squeezed in a training session
from a long time pro. Wow, I can hardly wait for the boat
to sail. |
