Selling
Yourself
Personal service businesses have one big thing in common: the
“service” they are selling is usually their own. This poses real
challenges to most people. While most entrepreneurs can extol
the virtues and benefits of others’ skills, it is often
difficult to “sell” our own.
The solution is to look upon it as “presenting” yourself, your
skills, your background, and the need for that in your
community, no matter how “community” is defined.
And that is exactly what your business plan will do.
Using the Praise of Others
As best you can, incorporate into the business plan reviews and
praise that you have received from others. You might use it as
sticky notes on your cover, or as sidebars in the business plan
itself. You could also add a section specifically called, “Our
clients speak out”.
Whatever you do, let your lender know that you are highly
regarded. It will go a long, long way to getting your funding.
Using Your Connections
We are who we associate with. That could not be truer than for a
personal service business.
Your connections will take you a long way. For instance, a list
of current or prior clients would be quite impressive.
Or creating an Advisory Board from your industry would also be
very impressive. The people who sit on this Board need not even
be local. With the advent of very cheap international
communications, they could be from anywhere. And they hold no
real power to change your company. They are advisory only. But
they can really add clout to your business plan.
