Your Service Business Plan
It is just too simplistic to look
upon a service business plan as "Mine!" It's not. As with any
other business, service businesses are based on the good will of their
customers. Creating that spirit of "working together" is a critical
skill in any service business.
THE BIGGEST HURDLE TO OVERCOME
Due to its personal nature, service businesses often don't have a lot of
collateral, no heavy equipment, no real estate. The "service" part of
"service business" means that people are the collateral in the business.
Sometimes it is just one person; sometimes it is many people.
When looking for funding, it is your personal expertise that will save
the day. If your business is new, expect the bank to ask for your home
as collateral. Sadly, banks are still very asset driven, and there
just isn't much they can ask for in terms of collateral.
OVERCOMING THE "NO ASSET" HURDLE
Wherever possible, ask for concessions from suppliers, landlords and
equipment dealers -- and note those accomplishments in your service business
plan. Sixty days for payment doesn't sound like a lot, but as much as
giving you breathing time, it demonstrates your negotiating skill.
Trade services wherever possible. Perhaps the property management
company needs a good accounting service like yours.
Document your success thoroughly. An advertising executive in
Chicago wanted to open her own agency. She was asking the bank for the
equivalent of a year's salary, no small amount in her league. She
challenged the banker to call every advertising agency he could find and ask
each one what they would pay to get her on staff. He did so. She
got her funding.
Finance the "hard" stuff -- the equipment, the building. Use your own
funds for the "soft" stuff -- the employees, the advertising.
Take it as far as you can without financing.
The easiest way to get financing is to be successful.
