Proliferation of Micro Financing Companies In Ghana
by: Kwesi Buhii

With the increasing numbers of microfinancing companies in our localities, may i humble know the following;
1. Does Bank of Ghana give them a license like the banks
2. who regulates thier susu colection and micro loans given to thier clients
3.who controls the interest rates which are charged minimum from 30% to 60% per MONTH and not per Annum.
4 what is the protection for depositors for all the schemes in place/
5 do they prepare any returns on loans given, income earned, any minum capital required to be loadged with a bankt mandatory ets

we all saw the growth of R5 and its demise and the hughe loss faced by depositors.

Note from Business Plan Master
Kwesi,
You raise some very valid questions. We are based in California and don't have direct access to these agencies, nor any means of judging them if we did have access to them. Since you are located in that region, try calling one or two of the microfinance companies and ask them these questions directly. Ask them which agency regulates them. Then contact that agency and try to determine what sort of regulation it is.

If you would like to write an article about your finding, we will be glad to post it on this site so that others can benefit from it too. Go to http://www.businessplanmaster.com/articles_for_small_business.html and submit any article that you have.

Thank you for raising this issue -- it is an important one.

Microfinance - Needs Investors Too
by: Anonymous

I have a registered micro finance company already doing very well. Our default rate after one year operation is zero and currently have an asset size of about GH¢1 million. However the source of our lending funds is very limited since we do not take deposits from the public and potential investors in our business are welcome.

Microfinance

I want to start a microfinance in Liberia. I have a beginning capital. How do i get started

Note:
Please see the note about Kiva, below. this is an excellent organization that can help you get started with your microfinance investment. If you have larger sums of money, also contact the the Grameen Foundation. One of those two organizations would, I am certain, be glad to help you get started.

Microfinance organizations can be difficult to manage. It takes times and dedication to identify and work with the entrepreneurs who will benefit most from your assistance. Both Kiva and the Grameen Foundation have worked through the process. If either of them is willing to share their experience and knowledge with you, you will be far, far ahead of the learning curve.

We do wish you every success in your endeavor.

Business expansion in Ghana
by: Rex

I have established my business where i produce crucibles for some of the mining laboratories like SGS in Tarkwa. I also produce fired clay tiles for cladding. The cottage factory is based in my family house.I want an investor in other to expand my production line. I have the market but limited in resources to meet the demand of the market. I am not interested in bank loans because the Ghanaian banking system only supports "buying and selling". they are not interested in production oriented businesses. I understand them because they are there to make profit; But it doesn't help a developing country like Ghana who should be concerned with industrialization. How do i get an investor?

Thank you.

Microfinance in Ghana
by: Jon, Business Plan Specialist

Willie, if I were you, I would contact Kiva and the Grameen Foundation . Both organizations provide microfinancing for the African continent. While they likely cannot invest in you directly, they will probably be able to provide lots of background help, help you set up policies and procedures, and may even be able to point you in the right direction for funding. Microfinance is a very specialized area, not one that most investors are familiar with. It has, I believe, enjoyed more success than traditional lending and has a very promising future throughout the world.

Best of luck with your project!
