For many of us, the thought of interviewing a banker sends shivers up our spine.  But it need not.  When you've got the right fit, your banker is one of your strongest allies.  Honest:  the bank WANTS you to succeed.  The more thriving businesses there are in the community, the better.

Here are some questions that we have found helpful in interviewing new bankers.  Take your pick, or use them all -- it is up to you.

[Excerpt from Starting A Retail Business]     How long have you been with the bank? (Usually longer is better. He has more connections with longevity.)     Where were you prior to this bank? (Does he come from big business or from small business?)     What made you choose this bank? (Listen for clues on what programs the bank has, what its attitude is, etc.)     What size company does the bank prefer working with?     What industry(ies) does the bank prefer working with?     Do you have any special expertise in that size and/or industry?     What community projects is the bank involved in?     Does the bank handle SBA guaranteed loans? (If not, this may not be the bank for you, no matter what else he says.)     Does your bank sponsor investor fairs with venture capital and/or angel investors?     What industry reports do you rely on? BizMiner? Robert Morris? Is it possible for me to get a copy of the industry report for my industry? (You probably won’t be able to get a copy of their information, but see how he responds to the question.)     What tools do you have to help businesses get started?     Do you sponsor any type of business seminars?     Could you recommend any accountants or attorneys that I might work with?     Who actually makes the decision on business loans, you or someone else? If it is someone else, will I have the opportunity to meet this person?     In our current economy, what is the best advice you can give to small businesses just starting out?

Jason Herz, Chicago I bought three other start up books.  They told me everything I already knew, like how to figure out the square footage of a store and how many shelves I needed to order.  What I didn't know was how to talk with my accountant, and that is what I know now.  All it took was finding the right book.

Janelle I've wanted a turtle store for years, but it just didn't make any sense in my town.  I'm the only turtle fanatic here.  But taking that notion online is a natural.  I'm still debating whether or not to have a real store, but I will no doubt have made up my mind by the time I finish the worksheets.
