For many of us, the thought of interviewing a banker sends shivers up our spine.  But it need not.  When you've got the right fit, your banker is one of your strongest allies.  Honest:  the bank WANTS you to succeed.  The more thriving businesses there are in the community, the better.

Here are some questions that we have found helpful in interviewing new bankers.  Take your pick, or use them all -- it is up to you.

(Does he come from big business or from small business?)     What made you choose this bank? (Listen for clues on what programs the bank has, what its attitude is, etc.)     What size company does the bank prefer working with?     What industry(ies) does the bank prefer working with?     Do you have any special expertise in that size and/or industry?     What community projects is the bank involved in?     Does the bank handle SBA guaranteed loans? (If not, this may not be the bank for you, no matter what else he says.)     Does your bank sponsor investor fairs with venture capital and/or angel investors?     What industry reports do you rely on? BizMiner? Robert Morris? Is it possible for me to get a copy of the industry report for my industry? (You probably won’t be able to get a copy of their information, but see how he responds to the question.)     What tools do you have to help businesses get started?     Do you sponsor any type of business seminars?     Could you recommend any accountants or attorneys that I might work with?     Who actually makes the decision on business loans, you or someone else? If it is someone else, will I have the opportunity to meet this person?     In our current economy, what is the best advice you can give to small businesses just starting out?
