years -- adult day care, big senior care facilities, small home care
places, complete senior care centers, some care centers specialized
for Alzheimer's disease. Whatever type of senior care business
you have in mind, there is a spot for you. Here is what will
get you started:

Starting An Elder Care Business.]
For many of us, the thought of interviewing
a banker sends shivers up our spine. But it need not.
When you've got the right fit, your banker is one of your strongest
allies. Honest: the bank WANTS you to succeed. The
more thriving businesses there are in the community, the better.
This is especially true with senior care businesses. Where the
bank can point to helping senior care facilities (as with your
business), it is helping the community as a whole as well.
Here are some questions that we have found
helpful in interviewing new bankers. Take your pick, or use
them all -- it is up to you.
[Excerpt from Starting An Elder Care Business]
How long have you been with the bank?
(Usually longer is better. He has more connections with longevity.)
Where were you prior to this bank?
(Does he come from big business or from small business?)
What made you choose this bank?
(Listen for clues on what programs the bank has, what its attitude is,
etc.)
What size company does the bank prefer
working with?
What industry(ies) does the bank
prefer working with?
Do you have any special expertise in
that size and/or industry?
What community projects is the bank
involved in?
Does the bank handle SBA guaranteed
loans? (If not, this may not be the bank for you, no matter what else he
says.)
Does your bank sponsor investor fairs
with venture capital and/or angel investors?
What industry reports do you rely on?
BizMiner? Robert Morris? Is it possible for me to get a copy of the
industry report for my industry? (You probably won’t be able to get a
copy of their information, but see how he responds to the question.)
What tools do you have to help
businesses get started?
Do you sponsor any type of business
seminars?
Could you recommend any accountants or
attorneys that I might work with?
Who actually makes the decision on
business loans, you or someone else? If it is someone else, will I have
the opportunity to meet this person?
In our current economy, what is the
best advice you can give to small businesses just starting out?
There are lots more worksheets and check lists
in your starting small business handbook.

Go ahead, starting an elder care business now may start making your dream come true.
We saw the
need with our own grandparents, but we just didn't know where to
start with a business caring for the elderly. Thank you --
this was what we needed.
Grace Wong, Stafford VA
We have our house, and our kids are gone, so now it is time to
turn our home into a day home for senior citizens as well.
I was really stumped on the financials until I got into digging
into yours. It makes a whole lot more sense now.
Yuksee Cullen
The whole
thing sounded impossible, but I had to start somewhere, so I
started here. It was the right place to start. Our
day care center for Alzheimer patients opened a month ago, and
we are already booked out. I am going to take your advice
and use the internet to help us grow into several more day care
centers. There is just so much need, both for adult day
care centers like ours and for real information.
Monica and Jack Woods
If I said caring for the
elderly was easy, I would be kidding. But it is very
rewarding. This is where we should be.
Myke, Kingman, Arizona
I could use a few more of
those cheerleaders for my senior day care center. lol.
I just keep learning an learning. Maybe some day I
will be a know it all.
